Q: What is "Sweet Itch"?
A: Sweet Itch, or Summer Eczema, is a problem that affects sensitive horses, ponies and donkeys. It is a skin disease caused by allergy to the bites of tiny Culicoides midges. Symptoms include severe itching, hair loss, skin thickening and flaky dandruff. Weeping sores may also occur.
Q: My horse gets itchy bumps on his belly. How does the Belly Dickie help?
A: The Belly Dickie prevents insects from coming in contact with your horse's sensitive belly skin. Many insects - flies, midges and mosquitos - rise from the ground under the horse and land on or chomp the first thing they contact - the belly.
With the Belly Dickie in place, the insects cannot reach the belly skin. Any existing condition can heal, and new breakouts will not occur.
Q: How do I acclimate my horse to the harness and Belly Dickie?
A: Acclimation instructions are shipped with each Belly Dickie, with pictures showing exactly how to make your horse comfortable with it. The simple process starts with rubbing your horse with the harness. Once your horse is comfortable with the harness, you repeat the procedure with the belly pad. Then you put the harness on your horse, attach the belly pad to the right side, then left side, then connect the center front snap. Your horse is now wearing the Belly Dickie, protecting the sensitive belly from biting insects.
Q: How do I measure my horse to get the right size?
A: The horse size is designed to fit horses from 14.2 to 17 hands high. The pony size is designed to fit ponies from 12.2 to 14.3 hands high. If your horse is very large, please call us toll-free at (866) 873-9824 so that we can tell you where to measure, to ensure a good fit.
Q: Do I need a special fly sheet to use with the Belly Dickie?
A: We’re happy to say that the original Belly Dickie works with any fly sheet.
